Buy receiver only? Is there a problem with that?

I see a couple of receivers for sale without controllers. I thought I would be fine to get just the receiver, but I read somewhere that the remote is required for configuration. Can anyone confirm this or tell me there is another way to configure the receiver.

I don't care about the controller because I love the phone interface. I have a V3 with a controller but I understand there is no IR on the Duet receiver so the V3 controller can't do whatever needs to be done.

I'd appreciate any advice on this issue,
