Duet Controller

I mainly use Squeezebox Commander on my phone to control the SB, but in order for the Duet to start working I've to switch on the controller. Is that normal or is there a way around having to do that?

Also is there a way to auto shut down the controller if it hasn't been used in x amount of time?
